The old good dog, the men working, the fire burning timbers- the ones that can't be reused. Deep biting cold, snow squeaks underfoot-
Winter of '26.
For many years, since driving past a working bonfire in the middle of a snowy, foggy field one February, I've imagined a painting of a big bonfire in the snow. That day I didn't stop to sketch- it was long before cell phone cameras.
It wasn't until this winter, when a real working bonfire consumed the beams we can't reuse, did the painting take immediate shape in the yard outside my studio. Jolene, the good dog, now 13 years old, spending her days outside in the snow, close to her human. The little boys of 40 years ago, now grown men working on the barn.
